Roanoke's Authentic Custard Shop

Frozen custard was introduced commercially in 1919, when the Kohr brothers added egg yolks to their ice cream for a smoother texture and to help the ice cream stay cold longer. They sold their frozen custard on the boardwalk of Coney Island in New York. Custard contains at least ten percent butterfat and one point four percent egg yolk and it has less fat and sugar than ice cream. It is made by a process that produces low air content so it has a dense, rich, and creamy texture.

Chris's Coffee and Custard opened their doors after four years of planning in March of 2021 in the city of Roanoke. Roanoke is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. Beth Woodrum and her son, Chris, are co-owners of the shop that employs young adults with special abilities. Chris has Down Syndrome and Beth had a desire for her son and others with special needs in their community to have jobs that they enjoyed, could work hard at, and were meaningful to them. She began with LovABLE Services as a training ground for those with special needs to learn skills for their future independence.

The custard shop is located in a historic building, next to the Roanoke River Greenway at the foot of Mill Mountain, that was once converted into a factory that made parachutes during World War II. Chris and his team offer a variety of creamy delights from their signature recipe of vanilla and chocolate custards. A Gob is their gourmet custard sandwich. The Concrete is Chris's custard and a choice of toppings blended together. Chris also offers milkshakes and custard specials in their homemade waffle cones or bowls, such as the Chris's Fave - vanilla custard, caramel and chocolate drizzle, in a chocolate dipped waffle cone with nuts, topped with Butterfinger crumbles. "Welcome to Chris's!"
